Heart Attack, Stroke, Cancer Warning Signs

Heart Attack Warning Signs –  ACT IN TIME – Call 911 – There is no charge unless you are taken to the hospital.

  1. Chest discomfort – Pain can involve discomfort in the chest that last for more than a few minutes, or that recurs.  The feeling may be of pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

  2. Discomfort in other parts of the body one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach

  3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort

  4. Other signs may be sweating, nausea or light- headedness

Stroke Warning Signs

​

  1. Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body

  2. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding

  3. Sudden trouble seeing with one or both eyes

  4. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

  5. Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

 

Recognizing a STROKE, remember the first 3 letters STR

​

  • S -Ask the individual to SMILE – does on side of the face droop?

  • T -Ask the person to TALK and repeat a simple sentence – are the words slurred?

  • R -Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS – does one arm drift downward?

  • New Sign of a Stroke — Stick out Your Tongue

If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

If he/she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. Time is important. If medical care can be provided within 3 hours the effects of the stroke can be reversed according to neurologists.

Cancer Warning Signs – See a doctor to have them checked

  1. Unusual bleeding or discharge

  2. A sore that does not heal

  3. Change in bowel or bladder habits

  4. A lump in the breast or other body parts

  5. Nagging cough

  6. Changes in a wart or mole

  7. Difficulty swallowing or feeling full without food
