Adult Protective Services
Spousal or caregiver abuse related to mental illness or dementia is a serious and often complex issue. It can occur in either direction:

-
A person with dementia or a serious mental illness may become physically or emotionally abusive due to cognitive decline, delusions, or lack of impulse control.

-
Conversely, a spouse or caregiver may become abusive toward the partner due to caregiver stress, burnout, or long-standing issues exacerbated by illness.
In these cases, Adult Protective Services (APS) can and should be involved if the situation involves:

-
An elder (60+) or a dependent adult with cognitive or functional impairments.
-
Any suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, whether from the spouse/caregiver or the ill individual.

How APS Can Help in These Situations

-
Investigate reports of spousal/caregiver abuse involving dementia, Alzheimer’s, or mental illness.
-
Assess both parties' safety and capacity, including whether the abusive behavior is due to medical issues.
-
Coordinate care or respite services for caregivers.
-
Arrange for in-home support, mental health treatment, or adult day care.
-
In severe cases, APS can involve the Public Guardian for protective placement or conservatorship.
